Catching Tularemia Early
Tularemia can be eradicated from the body so long as it isn't given enough time to spread to other places (stays localized) and does not become focal or systemic, which is possible in serious cases.
Some Tests Include:
-Blood culture for Francisella tularensis
-Blood test measuring the body's immune response to the infection (serology for tularemia)
-Chest x-ray (to see if the infection has spread to the lungs and has caused the beginning stages of pneumonia, which is a possible secondary infection.)
-Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test of a sample from an ulcer
What is a Serology Blood Test?
According to health.nytimes, "Serology is a blood test to detect the presence of antibodies against a microorganism. Certain microorganisms stimulate the body to produce antibodies during an active infection." In other words, it is a measurement of certain antibodies that are made by the body after it had been invaded by a foreign microorganism, which indicate to the doctor that the immune system is fighting off infection. This test looks for antibodies to F. tularensis in the clear liquid portion of the blood, which is called the serum, hence the name 'serology blood test.'
